I've heard lots of stuff about people who've studied millionaires and found that they still pinch pennies (deducing, therefore, that it's something the rest of us should do to be like them). But you're probably right about there being a bit of a learned psychological block there. We can obsess over the price of milk just as well poor as rich, so why not let some of that go when we're doing a bit better.
